Gur of Clan Charix
A tall, young male shifter with an enormous sword straped to his back.
Gur is a tall, young, male shifter. He has dark brown hair in small braids to his shoulders. Some have colored beads, pieces of cloth, or string attached. His beard thickly covers his jaw leaving his upper lip bare, and his golden eyes glow like burnished gold, particularly at night. He is heavily muscled, and most of his body is covered in hair. Underneath all that hair his skin is still a fairly dark brown. He wears stout leather boots with his durable brown leather adventuring pants, and coarse linen shirt with laces that are rarely done up. He carries a fullblade strapped to his back ready to smash.
Gur of Clan Charix was born in the Eldeen Reaches in the summer of 982YK. His father, Cullar, brother to the Clan Chief, is a longtooth like Gur, and his mother Alirdra, a longstrider, was one of the most accomplished scouts in the past hundred years. The Clan Chief was, unlike his brother, a tyrant. To keep Aundair back he would defile the corpses and not quite yet corpses and hang them from trees or impale they on spears. He would keep hostages just to bite out their throat before he enters battle. He would begin battle with the blood of one of his enemy’s helpless allies blood already on his tongue, and dripping down his chin. Cullar, and Alirdra both disagreed with the Clan Chief’s tactics, and sought a way to overthrow him and cleanse the clan.
When Gur was eight a group of explorers from Breland was captured by a clan strike force returning with captives to be sacrificed before the battle with the Aundairians in the coming week. Cullar, and Alirdra believed the explorers tale that they were from Morgrave University, and were in the Reaches gathering rare material components. The Clan Chief did not believe this tale. He believed them to be spies from Aundair and pledged to roast them alive on spits while the battle raged, and eaten for his victory dinner, while the other captives would be sacrificed as usual.
This was the last straw for Cullar, and Alirdra. They decided that they would not only free the Brelish explorers, but also the half dozen Aundairian soldiers that were taken. It wasnt until the night before a major battle with Aundair that they set their plan in motion. They had to kill their own clansmen in the process of freeing the captives, but the explorers were a very competent bunch with a very diverse skill set, and the soldiers knew their way around a blade well enough that most survived to escape the camp.
Gur was right there along with his parents in this mission with the child size training sword of the clan’s favored weapon, the Fullblade. He did not have to make his first kill that night. He didn’t even draw the blade from his back, but he was there sharp eyes watching. He, his parents, and the explorers fled first deeper into the Reaches away from the next day’s battlefield.
By mere happenstance they stumbled upon a grove in their flight that contained a sufficient amount of the final material component they needed to collect. There was also a strange symbol glowing on the ground in the center of the grove, and five more carved into trees surrounding the grove. None of these symbols were they same size, shape, or even in the same relative place on the trees, and the biggest, by far, being the one on the ground.
Two of the explorers began hurriedly copying the Dragonmarks, as they called them, into notebooks with notations on size and orientation. They were all very excited by these strange symbols and afterward pressed hard every day to get back to Sharn.
The explorers spoke highly of Sharn, and of the acceptance of shifters in the community. One of them was quite fond of a game called Hrazhak that was played entirely by shifters. This not only peeked the interest of Gur, but it peeked his parents interest as well.
The eight of them made their way back to Sharn, and Gur grew up around a hugely diverse population for the next eight years of his life. His parents became professional Hrazhak players, and now coach and lead their own team. They are currently ranked 36 out of the top 100 teams in Sharn.
The explorers kept in touch with Gur and his family, and were part of the inspiration to become an adventurer, and explorer himself. One thing the explorers never mentioned, and his parents never talked about was the meaning of those symbols. Gur never asked, but still wonders.
